Lisa Lewin, Director for Prime Brokerage Sales at BNY Pershing, won Excellence in Prime Services at Markets Media Group’s 2024 Women in Finance Awards.
What was your reaction to winning the award?
I was thrilled, honored, and humbled. It’s always nice to be recognized, especially with such a prestigious award from a great media outlet. I was appreciative of the recognition, particularly given the many qualified women and candidates under consideration
What have been the main drivers of your success?
One of the main drivers of my success, and something I emphasize to up-and-coming women in the industry, is to stay curious and eager to learn. I’ve always had a desire to learn and take on new challenges, which helps you become well-rounded and take the next step in your career. By challenging yourself, asking questions, and continuously learning, you evolve as a professional, creating opportunities for growth and success. This insatiable quest to learn and challenge myself has most likely been a key driver of my success.
What subjects interested you the most during your college days at the University of Kansas?
I was a history major, and I always say you can have any background or interest and still find something in finance that resonates with you. I never took a finance course in college, so starting on Wall Street 16 or 17 years ago was a whole new world. The skills I gained as a history major, like analyzing information and writing, helped me differentiate myself in finance. History still interests me—I love learning about foreign affairs, policy, and economics. One of the great things about financial services is how diverse the opportunities are; you can apply almost any skill set or interest. It’s about figuring out how to translate your skills into a role in the industry.
What’s your advice to the next generation of women wanting to enter finance?
My advice is to be open-minded, ask questions, and explore opportunities. When I started, I had a narrow view of finance, thinking it was all spreadsheets and numbers. Over time, I’ve realized there are roles for every skill, interest, and passion—you just need to be curious and explore them.
There are also so many accomplished and successful women in the industry now who are incredible role models and willing to help young women starting their careers. Don’t be afraid to reach out and network. The more conversations you have, the more you’ll learn about different roles, industries, and career paths. I’ve been fortunate to meet many women in finance who are open to sharing their experiences, and it’s both refreshing and helpful. Sometimes, you’ll need to take the initiative because senior women are often busy, but the effort is worth it. Networking and asking questions can open doors and help you find the right path in this diverse industry.
What makes you proud to work at your company?
BNY has a great culture that values its people, making it a wonderful place to work. That’s one thing that makes me proud to work here. In recent years, we’ve brought on a number of women in senior roles who have incredibly strong backgrounds. They’re impressive and inspiring. Whether I work with them directly or observe them from afar, it’s inspirational to see more women leaders join the firm.
